Our Holidays in Favignana – Our tips for your next vacation
If you are wondering about where to spent your next holidays, trust me, Favignana will be the best choice you can take.
Me and my girlfriend Stefania spent 6 days in Favignana for our fantastic holidays: leaving by car from Catania, crossed all the Sicily, we arrived in Trapani, the city which looks in the west, among salts Saline and the Egadi Islands, surronded by grapevines field which produce several of the best wine worldwide.
Located in the west part of Sicily, the main Island of the Egadi Islands is only 30 minutes far from Trapani coast, reacheble by hydrofoil.
We found a good parking in Via Avvocato Giuseppe Palmeri, the same road which will let you in the access for the hydrofoil (even if the entrance for the car is in Via Trento, the opposite side). The weekly fare is 60€ : a really good price, considering that the we found other places with around 100 € for the same amount of days. Moreover, you can reach the port through bus 2a or 2b for free (just a couple of minutes away).
We did not book our ticket for Favignana in advance, and for this reason we needed to wait some hours for the first available hydrofoil. My tips is BOOK IN ADVANCE YOUR TICKET (always two ways!). You can buy your tickets directly from http://eng.libertylines.it/ with less of 25€ per person, two ways.
The journey is smoothly and comfortable, lasting around 40 minutes, with the first stop in the Island of Levanzo, far only 5 minutes from Favignana.
We landed in the port of Favignana, which is located just in the small center of the Island: behind you, the famous Tonnara Florio, an icon of this Island, known to be one of the most productive place for the industry of the tuna fish during the last century.
As we get the ground, we went to our accommodation, a beautiful, cozy, new and fully furnished apartment, booked on Airbnb: it is located in the central square of Favignana. It is comfortable for 2 persons, but even for 4, and the owners are always available and so polite. No doubts: it worth every cent of it.
Then we needed to move in a fast and cheap way across the Island: well, a motor scooter is the right way to discover this incredibile world. We saw a lot of people go through by bycicle: to be honest, there are several slopes, and you should consider that the temperature can reach even 40 degrees during the hottest hours of the day. Whilst, by motor scooter, you can reach even the hiddest beaches, moving several times during the same day. We rent one, just in a rent-shop close to our apartment.
We got a motorcycle for 80€ for 6 days: we chose an old model, but you can valuate even a new model one for around 120€. But, especially in the port area, there is plenty of rent-shops for bicicle and motorcycle, where you can compare the best model and price for you.
There is only one oil-distribution in Favignana, and even the price is higher then Sicily, with 10€ we spent all our vacation.
Before to discover the most beautiful spots of this land, I would to advise that the wind can sometimes make the sea rough, which means not only it is not great to enjoy in, but even dangerous to diving into it. But don’t worried about that. If the south side is not great for the wind reason, you can enjoy the north side and viceversa.
At first we visited Cala Azzurra beach, called in this way just for the light colour of its waters. You reach it through the narrow roads of the islands, going between the wait small walls which divide the roads from the fields. Suddendly, Cala Azzurra appear at your right side, leaving you breatheless.
The place is not so wide, so I would to advice you to be there or during the first hours of the day, or during the hottest, when people starting to leave (and this is what we did): if you are lucky, you can find some spots over the rocks covered by dry seeweed, making it more comfortable than the naked rock.
The backdrop is made of white sand, which is the reason why the water here is so transparent and all the colour around so clear. The sea, as in all the Island, is so plenty of fish of small and medium size, perfect to enjoy snorkeling. More words, wouldn’t be enough to explain this place: you have to experience it.
Cala Rossa is the second place that we visited: you get here through a small and dusty white road, easily reacheble from the city center. The view from the top is one of the most exacting experience you can have here. The light-blu sea, the wide bay, the view streching up to Levanzo Island, is so amazing.
The road goes downhill, among the rocks, in a narrow path, not so comfortable to walk into. We recomand you to wear your sneakers or bathshoes here (but they will be useful in all the Island). After you have found your spot here, well you will feel in a sort of Paradise.
Bue Marino, is around 200 meters after, which you can achieve keep going the same road to Cala Rossa: the place is very unusual, due to it was a mine of tuff, the white rock that shaped the Island of Favignana. Just for this reason, you can have wide spaces of shadow, a no easy task in Favignana, in which the most of the beaches are without shodow places: these means do not forget to bring with you, water and solar cream.
Sandy Beaches in Favignana
If you are looking for sandy beaches were your children can play and enjoy the summer, Lido Burrone and the Praia are the places for you. The first one is in the south part of the Island, not so far from the city center. The beach is wide enough to have places for all (at least, in July), and you can rent here even your umbrella beach and deckchair. It is a nice place, usually full of famiglie but guys and couple too. Nice water, and fine sands. A great place in which relaxing.
The Praia, just close to the port, is the easiest beachto reach from the city center. Even though you can think that is not so beautiful, well it is comfortable if you need a quick refresh or an hour of relax, without moving from the center. The panorama is however valuable, among the Tonnara Florio, and the ancient castle over the top of the hill.
Other Beaches in Favignana
Another place that I strongly recomand you is Cala Pozzo Ponente, in the west part of the Island, reachble after to get a rough road, but it worth the journey. The place here is not crowned and you will be in a wild part of the Island, perfect to see sunset and enjoy the landscape. Moreover if you love snorkeling, you will see a plenty of fishes and sea urchins.
Unmissable are even the beaches of Cala Rotonda Punta Sottile and Calamonaci: Cala Rotonda is a wide bay, where the sea is always calm, while Punta Sottile and Calamonaci are rocky part of the island (and the sea during our staying was not perfectly calm).
Finally I would show a secret beach in Favignana: an amazing place that will be not so easy to find. But you have to discover it by yourself.
Seafood and wine are simply delicious, but even Sicilian Cannoli are great here.
Among the restaurant, we found a great quality at Quello che c’è c’è , where we ate a great mussels dish, a Tuna fish with red onion and fry fishes, with water and wine only 60 €. Great quality.
If you look for some cheap solution, two places you cannot miss: U Coppu, located in Piazza Europa, will give you a cone filled it up with fried seafood (the small one ony for 6€). Or at Scialae, in Via Archimede, where you can find “meatball” made of Ricotta and Tuna fish at only 1 euro each. So delicious.
Finally, I want to advise you about 2 bar for you breakfast in Favignana: the first one is Bar Gelateria del Corso, where you can find a plenty of typical sicilian sweets…all to try. The other one is Bar Europa, where you can fill your croissant with the cream you prefer. Both are located in Piazza Europa.
Other 2 important attraction you have to explore if you spent your holidays in Favignana: the first one is the well know Tonnara Florio, the old place where the Tuna fish was made for commercial propose after the seasonal Mattanza period: the cost of the ticket is 6 € and the entrance is allowed and guided until the 9.00 pm.
Finally, if you are well fit, you have to try to reach the old castle, settled over the top of the hill: A long path, made up of hundred step runs along the slope of the hill. You will need at least 30 minutes to reach the top, from where you will be able to view all Favignana landscape and admire the most beautiful sunset of this incredible island.
