The island of Stromboli is characterized by an increased volcanic activity among the Aeolian Islands, giving visitors the chance to see spectacular eruptions throughout the year. The volcanic phenomenon, characterized by the launch of ash and lapilli, does not however, constitute a danger for those who are going to come to Stromboli: effusive eruptions in fact, are carried away by the so-called Sciara del Fuoco, keeping safe the buildings of the few inhabitants.
Although the furthest away from Sicily, on the island of Stromboli, remnants have been found dating back to settlements of about 3000 years ago. Today the population has a very limited number of people, about 500, who live in small picturesque houses.
Since 1997 the island has been under the protection of the Natural Reserve of Stromboli and Strombolicchio.
